Geneva Special: The special contains videos, audio clips, pictures, articles and related links.

Update Number 100: 10th of August 1999
Thursday Update: It's strange that not many television networks covered today's event, the 50th anniversary of the Geneva conventions. Here's the only video I could find which has Fairuz singing in it.

Fairuz: 'MBC's Geneva report' (727 Kilobytes/ 30")

Wedensday Update: It seems that there is a song by Fairuz for every event. As the world observes the solar eclipse today, you Fairuz fans can also get in the mood (Fairuzian Mode) with Atem Ya Layal. Download or listen to the song. (638 kilobytes/ 2'44") Click here for more information on the Allayl Wel Andil.
Late Tuesday Update: Thanks to Akram and Richard, I didn't miss to tape the news about Fairuz departure to Geneva today Tuesday the 10th of August. It's here in real video and in great quality that even if you doubled the size of the video in the Real Player Program, you would still get relatively smooth and clear images. The clip contains a short interview with Fairuz as she is departing Beirut in which she mentions that she will sing Alardo Lakom. You can also watch the 1994 London concert version of the song.
Fairuz: 'Leaving to Geneva' (4.61 MB/ 3'09") (A MUST DOWNLOAD!)
London94 Concert: 'Alardo Lakom' (3.48 MB/ 5'55")

Note: I don't know what this signifies, but this is update number 100.

Update Number 97: 31st of July 1999
Note: Regular visitors have probably noticed that there wasn't an update last Tuesday. I was having difficulties with my computer and decided to upgrade it and I did. But since I'll be leaving in less than a month and I don't know if I will have immediate access to the Internet in the place where I will reside, I guess you people should get used to no updates. Anyway, this week there are 4 new video clips in better quality than previously featured ones. I will try to work on the site more these days so that I can be done with the incomplete sections by August the 15th.
New Poll: None this update.

Update Number 95: 13th of July 1999
News (Saturday): My computer broke down yesterday. There won't be any updates today or Tuesday. I will try to work offline on the undeveloped sections of the site. Anyway, if I get the computer back working, I may update the site on Sunday the 18th. Meanwhile you can watch this clip by Ziad Rahbani, Internal Chronic Diseases (It's about 3'14" and a little over 5 Megabytes). Check Ziad Rahbani Online for more information.
News (Saturday): An article was published in Alhayat newspaper on Friday claimed that Fairuz may sing in Egypt next August. This information is as accurate as it was stated. In other words, it's still not determined nor confirmed.
News: I am sorry for not updating the site with this piece of news earlier. Jean-Pierre Delifer, who designed the costumes in a number of the Rahbani brothers plays including Loulou, Almahatta and Nas men Warak has died last month. You can read about his work in the PDF document which was posted on Assafir site last month. Download a free version of Acrobat Reader from Adobe.
Update Notes: I have realized that videos are eating up the space on the server and I am only one megabyte away from reaching the maximum space limit. So here's the deal, if I upload a lot of videos or long videos, these clips will only remain for the period of one update only. That's why last update's clips have been removed. If you favor certain clips to others, take part in the poll which will expire next Saturday. The results WILL determine the contents of the upcoming clips. Interviews include documentaries and other special programs.
Download(s): The videos are available as downloads only.

Loulou: Fairuz: 'Men Ezz Enaoum' (1.48 Megabytes/ 4'26")
Loulou: Nasri Shameseddine: 'Boya Boya' (1.14 Megabytes/ 3'29")

Update Number 93: 6th of July 1999
Update Notes: You can now watch videos in real video format. But you have to have at least version 5 of the real player program. Update Number 91: 29th of June 1999: FAIRUZ TO STAR IN A NEW MOVIE!
News: The earlier rumor concerning a film based on Hala Welmalek musical play is correct! Currently there are negotiations with Nader Elattasy, the producer of the three films made in the 60's, and Youssef Chahine on how it will be made. However it's not definite that Chahine will be the one to direct it. It's well known that Chahine was the one to direct the first feature Rahbani wrote and Fairuz starred in, Rings for Sale. More to follow.
Information Center(s): Films: Rings for Sale. The page a lot of information and is going to contain more stuff soon. Expect Bint Elharess and Safarbarlek films pages in the next update.

Update: A new picture was added to the LV concert special.
Update: There is a new addition to the lists section. It's a page that contains all the songs and sketches from the available compact discs. However the plays and some albums have not been included yet. Click here.
News: The album titled 'Mouch Kayn Hayk Tkoun' was released on Saturday the 22nd of May. Even though it's relatively known as a fourth installment in the collaboration between Fairuz and Ziad Rahbani, four of the nine songs in the album were composed by Mohamed Mohsen. There is some argument considering the presence of two different genres of lyrics. The ones Mohsen employed from classic Arabic poetry in his songs and the others written by Ziad. There is also a 'Dianou' like song called 'Ya Qam7'. It's also worth noting that Ziad is currently working on another album for Fairuz which he is going to write all by himself. Click here for the cover design of Mouch Kayen. You can read a lengthy article about the new album in Alhayat newspaper, page 23, Monday, 24 May. (PDF)
Updates: The review will hopefully be available next Thursday. Hopefully ... a very nice word. But it seems like not happening.
Updates: A new picture was added to the Las Vegas special.
News: Expect a television report on LBC soon on the concert itself. The timing of broacast is not known yet. But it'll probably be shown on either the news or Neharkon Saiid morning program. The report may be shown on a program called 'Itha Tal Elamar' on the Syrian Satellite channel next Thursday.

This Update' Song(s): 'Sallimleh Alayh' from ' Mish Kayen Hayk T'koun'.

Cool links: There are strange things happening I tell you. Take the ouija board for instance, that got little Regan possessed. Or that infamous book, the Necronomicon, is it a real book of evil or just a sophisticated work by Lovecraft. Be prepared before you step into the horror .... the horror.

Update Number 79: 22th of May 1999
Update (5/23): Check the index page of the site for the cover of the new album 'Mouch Kayn Hayk Tkoun'.

News: Mouch Kayen Hayk Tkoun will be released today as publicized. Unfortunatly, it will be first available on cassette tapes. Compact Disc version of the album will be followed ten days later. The known song titles include Ishtaktellak, Moush Kayen Hayk Tkoun, Ya Sabi and Salimli Alih. Expect a review in the next update.
Rumors: Upcoming Fairuz concerts include a concert in Bayteddine and another in Paris later this year. Not Confirmed!
Rumors: I recieved an email from someone in which he says that it was announced on ART (Arab radio and TV) that during the Cannes film festival, director Yousef Chahine and the Syrian film producer Nadir al Atassi, who has produced Fairuz's past films, have agreed to start working on a new motion picture based on Hala wel Malek and that Fairuz will play the lead role in the movie, Hala. It's said that Chahine flew to Beirut a couple of days ago to begin preparing the film script with Mansour Rahbani. The film should be ready by next year. Just to make it clear, this information was announced on ART during an interview with the Lebanese film critic Mohammed Hijazi from the Cannes festival. Not Confirmed!
News: An art gallery was held in the Holy Cross Church in Damascus in which 35 artists exhibited their works. What's interesting is that the paintings were influenced by Fairuz and the Rahbani Brothers. Most of the participants were notably female artists. It was held in conjunction with another Fairuz/Rahbani influenced exhibition in which the works of ten children were shown. To read the entire article, download page 22 (PDF) of Alhayat newspaper 5/19.
New Tributes: Ziad Rahbani
New Album News: Check the news section for album details.
Las Vegas Concert: Two colored pictures from the concert added to the special as well as a new Beirut Times article.
This Update' Song(s): 'Shalik Refraf' from the 'To Assy'. I am trying to expirment with the quality of the audio of the songs. This week, slower connections may have difficulty listening to the song, a better alternative is to download it.
Song(s) to Download: Shalik Refraf (432 Kilobytes/ 1'52").
Cool links: You should really check the Gutenberg Project. It contains electronic text of hundreds of literary works. All the classics can be found here and it's free for you to download and read. I think this link is enough for this update.

Update: If you missed last update, check the archives.
News: Mouch Kayen Hayk Tkoun will be released anytime in the 20-23 May period. Unfortunatly, it will be first available on cassette tapes. Compact Disc version of the album will be followed ten days later. There are three songs that are broadcast on radio in Lebanon, Ishtaktellak, Moush Kayen Hayk Tkoun and Ya Sabi. They're three of four of Ziad's songs in the album. The other one is called Salimli Alih and there's an instrumental (like Dianou) as well.
News: Expect a television report on LBC soon on the concert itself. The timing of broacast is not known yet. But it'll probably be shown on either the news or Neharkon Saiid morning program, later today or tomorrow.
News: There was also some interesting news about a couple of albums released in Egypt. They were called Fairuz in the Royal Festival but they contained other concerts. The article also claims that Fairuz made a concert in the US in 1991! You can read more on the back page of yesterday's Alhayat newspaper (5/17).

Update Number 77: 15th of May 1999
Concert Update (5/17): Another article was added to the special section. It contains photos from the concert!
Concert Update (5/17): What an incredible night. Of course I wasn't there, but who can argue? Details of the concert have been available to us through two newspapers Alhayat and Assafir and I have to give the credit to Assafir for writing a lengthy detailed article. And of course people who attended the concert and shared with us their experiences. Thank you all. A special page including pictures, and the personal experiences of the fans will be available soon. I think by that the Las Vegas special will be complete.
Concert Update (5/17): Alhayat says 16 thousand and Assafir says 12 thousand people attended the concert. Regardless of that, the concert was originally intended for 10 thousand fans. How can one explain this? Fairuz broke the record she set for herself in mere two days when the MGM Grand changed concert plans and expanded the arena to its full capacity. People came from all over the world to attend the concert. A lot have said they first heard about it from the Internet. That was one thing I liked very much because I hope this site has helped with it. The song titles and more information about the concert can be found in the articles which are now accessible from the special's general information section. But what's most notably great was the presence of Assy and Mansour through all the classics she performed, Ziad through the musical introduction and Kifk Inta and Nasri Shameseddine through Haddouni which the choir performed. That was not just a concert.
Update: You know what? I flickered with the brightness of the monitor and lo and behold, oh my God, what in his holy name was that look the site had? The colors looked very bad, unlike how I've always seen them. So now I am in a frenzy trying to change all the flaws of design. I fixed the look of the contents page. If you didn't notice any changes, well, there's always Paris, if that means anything. I am also working on the album reviews. I can't believe that the design of the reviews is the same as I first made it one and a half year ago. Gee, where have I been? Also the interactive index page has changed in design. Again not an award winning design but better than the old one.
Lyrics: I went crazy and transcribed the entire Maarifiti Feek album. That took two days and I still don't know where 'Thal' (Arabic letter) is on the keyboard. Actually I do, but still it was hard to find.

Update Number 76: 11th of May 1999
Update: Been busy, not a lot in this update. Don't miss the live interview 'Khalik Belbayt' with Joseph Harb next Tuesday on Future TV. Strangely enough, the name of the show is similar to the name of a poem Harb wrote which was performed by Fairuz! How odd will that be? Anyway, If you're planning or can call to ask some questions or just to say hi, tell us on the message board and let's think of some questions. Actually you should check Harb's thread that was initiated a couple of days ago and see the questions we thought of.

Just In: The new album is going to be titled 'Mouch Kayen Hayk Tkoun'. It will be released by Relax-In and will be available for sale in the concert. More information to follow.
Just In: Voix de l'Orient released a new album a couple of days ago. It contains 16 songs originally produced during the 1957-1962 period. It's called 'Ya Tara Nassinia'. It's about 56 minutes. The songs are: Ya Oud, Samra Yam Ouyoun Wsaa, Ya Emm El Ain Khala, Sarlou Zaman El Helou, Baada El Layall, Ya Tara Nessina, Smeena, Boukra Byiji Nissan, Rih El Chimal, Ya Rabeena, Aal Yadi El Yadi, Ma Ahla El Rajaa Bakir, Ya Roubou Biladi, Oummi, Kermalak and Maghrour Albi. Everyone is commenting on the booklet and the design of the CD and that it is very beautiful. It sounds like Voix de l'Orient is progressing in that department. Fairuz probably didn't have much to do with releasing this album. But anyway, everyone should get it, but if you are lacking on money, then wait and get the new one. Special thanks to Richard and everyone else for providing the information. More information to follow.

Update Number 73: 1st of May 1999
Updates: I would like to thank everyone who has made this site one of his/her favorite destinations on the Internet, people who check regularly and keep the site going on, and others who signed in the guestbook and kept the message board busy with discussions. I would also like to acknowledge new visitors, where have you been? This is not a farewell message, even though it sounds like one. I just wanted to say this in the site's first anniversary since I got the domain name. The site went online in late October 1997. Then I decided I should move. And on May the first, I did. I think people became familiar with the new location a couple of days later. The site has kept on growing and gaining more popularity. Wafakakoum Allah, 3ash almoke3 wa 3ashet Fairuz! (God Bless all.)
Note: It seems that some people are interested in chatting, that's why in order to help, I added chat session times which I think should fit fine with everybody's schedule. Check the chat room.

Update Number 72: 27th of April 1999: The aftermath of last week's announcement!
Updates: I guess the aftermath of last week's news can still be felt in this week's update and I am not just talking about the size of the update. I've decided to update the site twice a week. Yes folks, but please no applause because this doesn't mean that the size of the the two updates will be the doubled size of the current update nor will the the one update be divided into two parts. There will difinitly be an increase in the number of additions, but what's probably the most interesting aspect of this is the faster news updates. Okay you can clap your hands now.
Note: Good or bad idea, the interactive part of the Las Vegas special was a failure, thanks people. That's why it was replaced with Fast Facts.

Update Number 71: 20th of April 1999: Fairuz Knows I Exist!
Updates: Fairuz checked the site. This is the best news I've recieved ever. I think you all can relate. She liked it and printed out the guestbook entires. I guess everyone who signed there is feeling great now. It's just great news. I am very happy. And from now on all the news on the site will be authentic and up to date. Check the news of this week. It includes information on the new album and the Las Vegas concert.
Site Updates: The special section index page has changed in design. Not by much though.
Note: Check Kas Elnoujoum re-run of the Saturday show on Philemon Wehbe next Friday on LBCSAT.
Quick LV Concert Update: There will NOT be any tour. It's one concert like it's being advertised. If the technical issues are quickly settled in Las Vegas, It's been thought to produce, with MGM grand, some promotional items as commemorative memorabilia. Unfortunately, it seems already short on time for this to happen, so all you folks going to the concert, start praying. Also for all Ziad fans, he is not going. Finally, MGM fixed the seating capacity of the stage for a maximum audience of 10,000 seats not 16,000, by Fairouz's request.
New Album News: This is 100% accurate. The recording of the songs has been finished and the album is now in the editing/mixing stage. It will contain nine tracks. Four songs are based on the Classic Arabic poetry and are composed by the Syrian composer Mohammed Mohsen. There are four other songs written by Ziad. The other track is an instrumental with Fairouz vocalizing over. The title of album has not been decided yet but it will probably be inspired from one of Ziad's songs. It's not going to be issued by Voix de l'Orient. As for the release date, it's anticipated to be shipped next May. It's been investigated to plan the release in conjunction with the Las Vegas Concert where the album should be launched and made available for sale. More news to follow!
New Album News: There is another album which is going to be written by Ziad Rahbani. He's currently working on it.
New Special: Las Vegas Concert Special including an exclusive poster of the concert.
New Feature: As you have probably noticed, there is a search engine which you can use rightaway. I have to warn you though, while building the site, I overlooked important aspects that direct search engines. What that means is that the searches you'll make will not be 100% accuarate. I will try to fix this problem and add more to the narrow your searches. Things to search for include songs, which albums, certain events, etc.
New LV Poster: Check this new colored poster/promotion of the Las Vegas concert.

Update Number 70: 13th of April 1999: And when you thought there wasn't an update ...
Late late Tuesday Updates: Check Future TV next Thursday (15th of April) for a live interview with Elias Rahbani. He will be appearing on a program called Allayl Almaftouh at 7:30 pm.
Late Tuesday Updates: I just finished redesigning the index page of the files section. I think this one looks far better. I am not saying I should get an award for it, but comparing it to the old design, let's just say, I saved a few lives from being shocked that that kind of HTML design still exists. If you don't know what I am talking about, just go to the lists section and see how the files index page used to look like. Something similar. Next I will work on the specials section index page, then the lists section index page ... after I figure out what to put in there. When I finish with all the redesigning which I am going to do in my spare time, meaning that it won't take from the energy put in making updates. That also means that 'Patience is a virtue'. After that, I will be set to rule the world. Hahaha.
Updates: Dare I defy my words? Will I succeed? Can I break the seal? Well, Kind of. This is not just your average update. It came to you as a surprise (1) and it's pretty big too (2). I also have to say this. Not to undermine Sabah Fakhery or anything, he's my favorite male singer, but last week he appeared on 'Kas Elnoujoum', a singers talent search TV program. That was shocking for me to see because a couple of years ago in Ramadan, he and Elias Rahbani were both invited for short interviews on Future TV. When the interviewer asked Fakhery first for his opinion on this method of selecting future stars. His reply was harsh and he denounced the whole thing. That made Elias very uncomfortable because he has been involved in something similar for years on another TV program called 'Studio Elfan' which can be called the father program of 'Kas Elnoujoum'. It was just strange to see Fakhery change his opinion like that. I wonder what Elias is thinking. Both Programs are the productions of LBCI. Don't miss the upcoming episode dedicated to he late and great Philemon Wehbe.

Update Number 69: 6th of April 1999
News: Friday. LBC and Teleliban television stations have both anounced that they're going to show Fairuz's Good Friday concert tonight (4/9) at 8:30. LBC is going to put a mass from Antelias while the Tele-Liban is going to put a mass from the Balamand monastery. Also, the new album is completed and ready for release. It will be available before the end of April.
Updates: I know. There is not much of an update. I've been busy enough to do something on the site. Pretty lame, right? So I will make a suggestion, I will not update the site next week. This two week period will give me time to do a lot of things before May 4th which is the date the site first moved to fairouz.com/ I Guarantee you will find At least 5 information centers, 4 songs, more album reviews, Ziad's page (which is half way made), the Poets page finished, new poll + hmm ... more songs to download + Aaa
All those regular visitors know what I do when I make a promise and I always show determination and strong will not only to fulfill in time but to even add more to what I originally state. To them I say I won't break it this time!
Meanwhile, you should try to explore the site, you may find something you haven't checked before, or you can visit Chadi Chaya's site on Ziad Rahbani which he has just moved a couple of days ago into a new location at http://www.ziad-rahbani.com You can also check the other links in the special section.
Of course, if some news come up, I will then update the site with it. If you hear of anything, either email me or post it on the message board. By the way, something exciting happened the last week, my site got listed in Yahoo. I've been trying to add it there since I built the site back in October '97.
Also, why don't you take the time, check the articles section and buy yourself the albums and/or plays based on the reviews there. I truely recommend the play Mais Elrim. To convince you, this week's audio file is made of selections from the play.

Update Number 68: 30th of March 1999
Updates: Last week I forgot to mention, that Nasri Shameseddine showed remarkable dedication when he played the role of Ribal in popular musical play Petra. For someone who has literally groomed his moustache over the years, and especially since the moustache is a big thing in the Middle East, it was out of dedication and devotion to see it shaved for the role. I am sorry the update isn't much and that I didn't finish the poets' tribute but I have been feeling sick for a couple of days now and I will try to finish it as soon as possible.

New Tributes: Poets: Saiid Akl, Joesph Harb and Talal Hayder. (Still not Finished!)

Update Number 67: 23th of March 1999
Updates: Not as planned and only one information center. As you can see that the news about the concert and the new tributes have taken all the time originally planned to design the pages. There was also the Oscars to watch.
News: Just to clear something out, the news on the American tour is not confirmed. Add to that MGM is advertising the Las Vegas concert as a one historic performance. It seems logical that there will be more than one concert as it is cheaper to produce and guaranteed to succeed. However, to be on the safe side, anyone planning to see Fairuz should attend the Las Vegas concert. Again, no need to remind everyone that the tickets have been on sale for more than a week now and that the concert has been advertised about in major American newspapers, so it's wise to buy tickets now, if you plan to attend the concert. This week you can get to see the seating configuration as well as the press release of Fairuz's concert. There is also a scanned ad from Los Angeles Times of the concert.

Updates: Update Extravaganza. Check all these new things and come back next week for even more specials, reviews, tributes, etc. There is also a new subsection called the Information Centers and it focuses on the musical plays and the films extensively. This week's plays are 'Jibal As-Sawan' and 'Ash'Shaks'. Sidenote: I said that the site is going to be re-designed, however this seems not to be happening for many reasons, one is that with all the new updates, it's hard to find time to work on the site. The other thing, is that I have been building this site for over a year now and I am kind of clinging to this old design. However, there are new parts which are going to have their independent looks as there will be some enhancements to the current design of some pages.

News: I know I promised with a lot of new things in this update, but the truth is I am in a state of confusion, I swear to God I don't know what's going on. I am adding a lot of new sections and it's just all confusing. That's why I will not deliver an update next week. But the week after, expect a new design for the site (a professional designer is working on that), lots of tributes, lots of specials, lists section worked on, etc. Anyway this update has a new feature 'Fairuz mail'. News: Sabri Sharif died Saturday the 30th of January 1999. Sharif has been a great contributor to the Rahbani art. He played a big role in producing and financing early Rahbani efforts. Read more on Sabri Sharif.
News: Of course the Jordanian concerts were a success. But I don't have a lot of information to publish. I know that there was a special greeting to Palestine. If you have pictures or would like to write something on the concerts, please contact me. Maybe we'll do a feature like with the Tunisian one.
News: In a telephone call I made to Voix de l'Oirent I was told that there is a new ablum due in the Spring. In another call with Relax In, the Kifak Inta label, well, there was no answer.

Update Number 60: 26th of January 1999
Note: So there were a couple of commercials here and there. I think what was disappointing really, is that LBC showed the Documentary ten minutes earlier. But I can't say I am complaining.
News: Mansour Rahbani is working on two new plays. One is called 'Malek Lilejar/A King for Rent' for which he wrote the music, the songs and the dialouge. It also happens that there is an old play that both he and his late brother Assy wrote back in 1975 called 'Zaman Alissa/Time of Alissa'. It was supposed to be performed in Baalbeck but the festival got cancelled that year. (Source: Alhayat Issue 13103. Thursday 21 January 1999.) It sounds very interesting. As for Fairouz, let's keep our fingers crossed for news on her participation in these projects. It sure would be great if she along with Hoda, William Hasoani and Joseph Nassif would return all in one great play. Maybe even written by Mansour and Ziad.
News: Mansour Rahbani is overwhelmed by the success his play 'Last Days of Socrates' made in Egypt. The play which was performed from the 12th to the 17th of January 1999 was attended by about 7000 people. It became the most successful play performed in the Egyptian Opera House ever since it was built in 1988. Mansour was quoted as saying that people still have taste in music and whenever they are presented with a qaulity work they will apperciate it.
News: Fairouz salutes King Hussein. That was Alhayat newspaper's headline for their article on the upcoming Jordanian concerts. She (Fairouz) said that she was happy that her concerts coincided with the king's return. Fairouz will be opening the new Amman Civil University's theater which can hold about 5000 people. Ticket prices are sold for what is equivalent of 50, 70 and 100 American Dollars. The last time Fairouz sang in Jordan was in 1982 in Jarsh. First time was in 1966 and she also performed The Rahbani Brothers famous musical play Petra in Jordan in 1976. For those who missed the upcoming Jordan concerts information, they should check either the relevant threads in the message board or the News archives.
